Our unit is staffed for 6 PICU beds and 4 HDU beds, with the staff-dependent flexibilty to go up to 9+6 beds during busy Winter periods.

We admit around 260 - 300 PICU patients per year, of whom around 80% are ventilated. We also admit a similar number of HDU patients.

There is always 1 nurse per bed. The medical cover is provided by a team of 7 conusltants and 7 registrar grade doctors and advanced nurse pracitioners.

We have participated in the national Paediatric Intensive Care Audit Network (PICANET) since it started in late 2003. This allows us to know and compare our standardised mortality ratio (SMR) to other PICUs. Our SMR is 0.6 - 0.65, so well below 1.0, and this compares very well with our peers.
